Following up on my last post, which you can read here in case you missed it.
You can use that fear you have and turn it into something positive, or the fear will completely paralyze you, turning you back into an infant mentally.
Being a grown adult who has been reduced to a sobbing uncontrollable mess probably is not the path you want to take.
So, what can you do instead?
Use that fear to your advantage.
The fear leads to uncomfortableness.
The uncomfortableness should be used to propel you forwards, towards change.
You become comfortable in your house.
Comfortable with your family.
Comfortable with your job.
You have a schedule and you seem to be in control of your little life.
Then, your job is threatened, or your child or spouse gets a life altering health diagnoses.
Everything you once knew is immediately flipped on its head.
You could lose your job, then your house, then your wife and kids.
You become afraid.
Reverting to a childlike state is not going to help your loved ones.
Actionable steps must be taken to deal with the fear you are facing. You become forced to do things you would have never thought you would have to do.
You have to identify your fear
If you do not know what you are afraid of, how can you overcome it? Be specific. The more specific you are, the more you will be able to analyze your excuses for not overcoming the fear and the more you will be able to break it all down into bite sized chunks, which are easier to deal with. Being vague only hurts. You also must realize fear is completely normal. Your coworkers, family and friends all have had fear they have had to overcome. Pick their brains. Learn from them. You might be surprised at what you learn.
Write down what could be best and worst case scenario.
Most often the worst case scenario is where well all head mentally. I know I certainly think the worst, which I am working on. When you write down the worst case scenario, with a pen and paper not on your phone, you can visualize the problem easier. Then write out steps you have to take in order to put worst case scenario out of view. Example, you lose your job you worked so hard to get. Will the world come to a stop? Probably not. Sure, you might get knocked off your feet for a month or so, use that as a motivator. If you want your life to continue the way it was going before you lost your job, you have to get back on your feet, or you will find yourself in the worst case scenario. With nothing. So, write down the steps you have to take in order to move away from nothing. Take steps in the opposite direction.
Look forward and back
Take time to think about what you have accomplished, about how you got to the position you are in right now. Doing this helps put everything into focus. Zooming out on your life as a whole can be used as great motivation to push ahead. It can also be used for those who are just beginning. Picture what your life could be if you just took that first step. Let the success of others be a motivator. They were not born in the position they are currently in. They failed. They had doubts and fears, but they used them as motivators. If they didn’t, then you wouldn’t be using them as motivation because you would have no idea who they were because they let their fears get the best of them.
How can you achieve success if you are afraid to conquer your fears?
Take that first step, no matter how small.
Until next time…
Speaking of fear…
